hysteria settles into her gut. sophia didn't follow him through this supernatural conflict just so she can knife him in the back later.
she realizes something even worse. he's completely serious, and it might not even matter that it's her. zahir could find someone else. someone else who has much fewer qualms about hurting him. for all she knows, that might be half his facebook friends already. the forsaken didn't sound like an trustworthy bunch.
she's not much. killing is too difficult for the job that the universe has assigned her. she's no leader, no true king. but sophia wants zahir to be okay, and that's more that can be said for anyone else in this world. sophia is still young enough to believe that what she wants means anything in millennia-old schemes of gods with too much time on their hands.
she turns back to him, and her words are harsher this time. "if something happens because the dark one is more powerful than you are, then there's nothing to forgive." it's not the answer that the philosopher wants, but that was never the intention. his desires are dangerous things. "just don't give up on yourself. don't give up on overcoming him." she's practically glaring at him, daring him to object. "if you don't run away, then i'll agree to your terms." sophia's face softens to give way to misery. the truest honesty she can offer.
it's only fair, isn't it? he's been carrying his burden the whole time. it's only fair that she should promise him some of her strength.
sophia presses her head against his chest. "don't ask any more cruel things from me" she wants to be comforted. she wants comfort between two people who barely have enough for themselves.
